Covid–19 and Education in Northern Ireland

Covid–19 and Education in Northern Ireland

Queen’s University Belfast and the independent public policy think tank Pivotal have together launched a series of podcasts on the impact of Covid–19 on key aspects of life in Northern Ireland.

Hosted by Ann Watt, Director of Pivotal, each episode sees experts from Queen’s, Ulster University, and the Pivotal network, come together to look at areas such as the economy, leadership, and the education sector during, and after, the pandemic.

In this third episode, the panel discusses the impact of Covid-19 on education in Northern Ireland. The speakers are Professor Tony Gallagher, Professor of Education at Queen’s University Belfast; Professor Siobhan O’Neill, Professor of Mental Health at Ulster University; and Dr Bronagh McKee, Senior Lecturer at Stranmillis University College.

School closures because of Covid-19 have transformed the lives of children, parent and teachers in recent months. How have schools in Northern Ireland and elsewhere handled lockdown? How has learning happened during this time? What do we know about the impact on children and young people’s wellbeing and learning? As schools prepare to re-open in September, what should be the priorities? Are the right policies in place to support children and young people as they return?

Previous episodes in this podcast series looked at the impact of Covid-19 on the Northern Ireland economy, and at leadership during Covid-19.
